Over ten years ago, when the we started compiling the music for Desert Blues, we could not have imagined that we were actually creating a whole new genre. The journey to the serene side of African music has since been awarded international prizes, has been in the charts for months and is regarded as the “best-selling compilation of African music of all time” (fRoots). Many stars from the countries around the Sahara have allowed themselves to be inspired by the Desert Blues. For Desert Blues 3, the editorial team has evaluated all the new releases of recent years and is now presenting the creme of musicians from 10 countries and their highly emotional ballads: including, super-stars Khaled and Souad Massi from Algeria; Malouma “The Lady of the Blues” from Mauritania; the poignant voice of Dhafer Youssef from Tunisia; Gigi, the current queen of Ethiopian soul music; expressive music from Mali by Amadou and Marian, Ali Farka Toure, Oumo Sangare, Rokia Traore with the Kronos Quartet; “Fula Flute” from Guinea; Tuareg music from West Africa by the successful group Tinariwen. After the huge success of Ambiance du Sahara - Desert Blues, with sales in excess of 100 000, the Frankfurt-based label Network has now released a follow-up album Reves d'oasis - Desert Blues 2. The enthusiastic press reviews and many awards they won for their first foray into the rich tradition of North African ballads gave the Network team the incentive to take up the challenge once again. For the latest anthology Reves d'oasis - Desert Blues 2 Christian Scholze and Jean Trouillet took an initial body of some 1000 pieces of music and short-listed them in several rounds until they had a final selection of 26 tracks that cover a broad spectrum from the traditional to the contemporary, featuring encounters between musicians of different cultures. The latest developments are showcased alongside classics that are now available on CD for the first time. This double CD presents the quiet side of Africa’s musical cosmos, with magnificent vocals that entrance the listener, full of sadness and joy: Songs like waves at night, as Bruce Chatwin described them. This double CD (some two and a half hours playing time) presents the musical cosmos of Africa at its most tranquil, sung by the most magnificent voices. These are spellbinding voices indeed, poignant in their melancholiy, jubilant in their joy. "Songs like waves at night", in the words of Bruce Chatwin. This is music that touches the soul. It is, according to the Tuareg, music that heals. Tone and mood reflect the breathtaking landscapes of desert, steppe and forest, telling of ancient civilisations and the peoples who live there: Tuareg, Mandinka, Fula, Moors... Featuring the great bards, Senegal's Baaba Maal and Youssou N'Dour, as we never heard him before and introducing for the first time ever on record popular Fula singer Abou Djouba. With Grammy award winner Ali Farka Toure from Mali accompanied by Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal. With female vocalists Oumou Sangare and Sali Sidibe. Hassan Hakmoun presents gnawa music from Morocco.
